{Live Gorge} Baby’s First Library

bookshelf

The Twinsicles nursery is coming along. The room has been painted, furniture has been ordered, some has even been delivered, and the accessories are coming along. Next on my list is their library. My heart goes pitter patter just thinking about reading them bedtime stories while snuggling together in their rocker. I want their library to be fun, and of course, educational. Since I didn’t know where to start, I called my good friend Lori, who is a teacher and literature expert (check out her site, readingwithbean.) She’s also a fellow mama-to-be (we are due about 2 weeks apart) and has a sweet, adorable toddler she affectionately calls Bean (seriously, how cute is she!!).

So why read to your baby from birth? Lori says it’s essential. “It may seem fruitless at first, but early exposure to books helps determine a child’s literacy success later,” she says.

When choosing books for your baby ages 0 – 1, keep these tips in mind:

-Look for books with vivid pictures
-No more than 1-3 lines on a page
-Rhyme, rhythm and repetition are important
-Animals in books are a favorite
-Pick books that you will enjoy reading

Here are her top favorites for your baby’s first library:

  1. Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle
  2. Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems
  3. Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell
  4. Click, Clack, Moo by Doreen Cronin
  5. Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andrae
  6. Pout-Pout Fish by Deborah Diesen
  7. The Going to Bed Book by Sandra Boynton
  8. First 100 Words by Roger Priddy
  9. Dig! by Andrea Zimmerman
  10. Are you My Mother? by P.D. Eastman
  11. Guess How Much I Love You by Sam McBratney
  12. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
